App Store Crawlers and WordPress Publishing · Integration & Automation · Web Development

TechiesPad

TechiesPad, a technology publisher in India, wanted to launch app directory sites: thousands of pages describing apps from Google Play, the Microsoft Store and Apple's App Store, each with a guide to installing it on a PC or Mac. We built the crawlers that collect the app data and the WordPress plugin and theme that turn it into published pages automatically.

Workflow: BizHues crawlers collect app data from Google Play, the Microsoft Store and the Apple App Store, write CSV batches that a WordPress plugin imports into published app pages with an install guide; visitor downloads go to the official store

TechiesPad already ran several WordPress sites and wanted a new kind of site: an app directory with a page for every app, built from the store listings and improved with their own content. Doing that by hand was out of the question. There would be thousands of pages, and the stores change constantly.

The brief had three parts that all had to work together. Crawlers had to collect app details and images from three very different stores without getting blocked. The data had to be stored and published to WordPress automatically, with the client's own additions, such as a step-by-step install guide with each app's name filled in. And every page still had to be editable for SEO, on a setup the client could reuse across the other domains they own.

We built three separate crawlers in Python and Scrapy, one per store, so each can be installed, scheduled and maintained on its own when a store changes its layout. They crawl politely, with randomised delays between requests and configurable proxies, so the stores treat the traffic as normal and the client's server is not blocked. Images are downloaded at the right sizes, and each crawler was tested across the stores' categories, because listings that look identical often differ in the details.

We kept the data useful rather than exhaustive. Popular apps carry hundreds of thousands of reviews, so we recommended collecting the most recent ten to fifteen instead, which keeps the database lean without losing anything a visitor would read. Ratings that the stores show only as star graphics were converted into numbers the site can use. The Microsoft and Apple crawlers run on scheduled jobs, and Google Play uses a separate on-demand approach that suited that store better.

On the WordPress side we built a plugin with custom post types and an admin panel to search the collected data and import it, so the setup can be installed on any of the client's sites, plus a custom theme for the home page, app listings and app pages. Each import fills in the client's standard install guide with the app's name, and every page stays fully editable afterwards.

We also advised on how downloads should work. The site does not host the apps, which the client is not licensed to distribute, so each page sends visitors to the app's official store or developer download.

The complete system was deployed on the client's server: three crawlers, the WordPress plugin and the theme, with written guides for running the crawlers and managing the WordPress side, and the full source code handed over.

Instead of writing thousands of pages, the client now collects app data on a schedule, imports it in bulk and publishes pages that already contain their own install guide, then edits individual pages for SEO where it matters. Because the publishing side is a plugin, the same setup works on any of their other sites.

Vipin did an excellent job in this project which was a bit tricky one. He kept me informed about the progress, researched a lot, gave valuable suggestions. He is the real deal, I highly recommend him. A pleasure to work with, will surely work with him again in future.
